SARASOTA PLASTIC SURGEON DISCUSSES HOW FACIAL FAT TRANSFER CAN ENHANCE THE BENEFITS OF FACELIFT SURGERY

Posted on February 2, 2015

Jeffrey Scott, MD says, for patients who may have lost volume in the cheeks and other areas, fat transfer in combination with facelift surgery can enhance facial contours for an even greater aesthetic benefit.

Sarasota, FL – Facelift surgery has been an extremely popular procedure for patients wishing to turn back the hands of time and achieve smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. However, in addition to wrinkles and sagging skin, some patients are affected by volume loss in the upper cheeks and other facial areas which cannot be improved with facelift surgery alone. Dr. Jeffrey Scott, a plastic surgeon in Sarasota and the Bradenton area, says an advanced procedure called fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, combined with facelift surgery can effectively address specific areas of the face where volume has been lost without adding on to the typical facelift recovery time. “Re-volumizing these areas with micro fat transfer techniques can frequently further enhance the overall rejuvenation of the face.”

Fat transfer involves the extraction of excess fat cells from areas such as the thighs or abdomen via liposuction. The extracted fat cells are filtered, concentrated, and then injected into the areas of the face being targeted for volume restoration. Dr. Scott says this treatment can be an effective add-on for patients who are undergoing facelift surgery; however, not all patients may need it. “Some people maintain their facial fatty volume as they age and require only elevation of the skin and soft tissues with no fat transfer. Also, through weight gain, some patients may actually have more facial fatty volume than they would like. In this scenario we would obviously not perform fat transfer.”

For patients who may need the treatment, Dr. Scott says fat transfer adds numerous other potential benefits to a standard facelift procedure. The patient can achieve the advantages of: liposuction in a specific body region in order to harvest the fat cells; volume restoration to the cheeks or other facial features from the fat transfer technique; and reduction in signs of age and sagging skin from the facelift itself. In addition, Dr. Scott says the results of facial fat transfer treatments are known to last for extremely long periods of time.

Dr. Scott notes that fat grafting techniques can also be used in other procedures, such asbreast augmentation with fat transfer. He says the facial fat transfer procedure, when combined with a facelift, can ultimately serve to enhance the outcome for many patients and help them improve a range of aesthetic issues for a more comprehensive result.
