Dr. Jeffrey Scott with The Plastic Surgery Center of Sarasota & Bradenton discusses CoolSculpting®, a non-surgical liposuction alternative to help patients reduce localized areas of excess fat.
Sarasota, FL – In many cases, no matter how much people exercise or how strictly they adhere to a diet, they are still left with areas of excess fat that simply won’t go away. While treatments, such asliposuction, have helped many individuals eliminate these excess fat pockets, some people are concerned by the surgical nature of the procedure and the recovery time that’s necessary after treatment. Dr. Jeffrey Scott, a Bradenton and Sarasota plastic surgeon, says a non-surgical alternative to liposuction called CoolSculpting® is becoming more and more popular at his practice, allowing patients to reduce excess fat without surgery or downtime.
CoolSculpting® is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The treatment is designed to remove excess fat cells in body areas such as the flanks (love handles), abdominal region, back, and inner thighs. CoolSculpting® uses a technique called cryolipolysis to cool fat cells in the area targeted for treatment. A special suction device is placed over the target area, which cools down the fat cells causing some of them to die. The fat is gradually eliminated from the body via natural processes. Dr. Scott says most patients see the best results two to four months following the treatment.
Dr. Scott notes that there are a number of benefits to CoolSculpting®, including:
- No needles, anesthesia, or incisions are involved
- There is typically no downtime required after treatment
- There is no pre-surgical preparation necessary
- Most patients experience a gentle treatment process, often reading a book or taking a nap while the procedure takes place
While many patients are often candidates for CoolSculpting®, Dr. Scott says patients who have larger areas of excess fat and those who are trying to eliminate fat in areas CoolSculpting® was not designed to treat may benefit more from liposuction. He also notes that it may take more than one treatment with CoolSculpting® for some patients to reach optimal results.
Dr. Scott says the best way for individuals to determine if CoolSculpting® is right for their needs is to talk with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can advise them on their options. He says CoolSculpting® is one of the few non-surgical fat removal treatments to come along over the years that has helped patients achieve such a high quality result.
