Many women desire a more youthful, perky and curvaceous look to the buttocks. A buttocks augmentation can achieve this with fat transfer techniques or the use of gluteal implants. Fat transfer augmentation is commonly referred to as a “Brazilian Butt Lift.”
BUTTOCKS AUGMENTATION CANDIDATES
Women often consider buttocks augmentation because they are unsatisfied with a squarish or flat appearance in the gluteal region. The fat transfer technique requires that patients have enough fatty deposits available elsewhere on the body to provide adequate volume for the buttocks. The Brazilian Butt Lift provides the added benefit of contouring down surrounding parts of the body to further enhance the curvaceous appearance. Very slender women often have an inadequate amount of available fatty tissue for transfer, so placement of silicone gluteal implants is the ideal method of enhancement for these individuals.
Patients should be at a relatively stable weight prior to undergoing gluteal enhancement. However, Dr. Scott will occasionally encourage mild weight gain in individuals who could benefit from having more fat available for transfer. Cigarette smoking can significantly reduce the survival of transferred fat, and cessation is advised for at least three to four weeks prior to the procedure. Dr. Scott also encourages patients to concentrate on gluteal muscle strengthening exercises prior to this procedure.
BUTTOCKS AUGMENTATION SURGERY
Dr. Scott performs buttocks augmentation procedures in an accredited ambulatory surgery center. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts two to four hours. The fat transfer technique uses liposuction for fat harvesting. The most common sites for harvesting are the abdomen, hips, flanks, back and thighs. In individuals with a boxy gluteal appearance, liposuction is also performed along the upper outer and/or lower outer gluteal region. The harvested fat is concentrated and purified, and the purified fat is transferred into the gluteal region with a syringe and transfer cannula. The fatty transfer is performed meticulously in a layered fashion to create an ideal gluteal contour.
Typically, 30-40% of the transferred fat will resorb, and 60-70% will survive long-term. An overcorrection of fat is typically transferred to account for this mild reabsorption.
The use of silicone gluteal implants is often required for very slender individuals seeking a buttocks augmentation. The incision for this procedure is hidden over the lower sacrum within the intra-gluteal crease region, and the gluteal implants are placed inside the gluteus maximus muscle on each side. There is typically more discomfort associated with the gluteal implant technique than with the fat transfer technique.
