Understanding Gynecomastia

male breast reduction

Gynecomastia is the term for when the breast tissue is enlarged in men. It causes a lot of mental anguish and can sometimes cause physical pain as well. There is hope, however. Surgery can help resolve the issue. Learn more about what causes this condition in the first place and what can potentially be done about it.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The most obvious and common culprit of this condition is an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is considered a primarily female hormone, and it is what controls the growth of breast tissue. When there is too much estrogen and not enough testosterone, gynecomastia can occur.

Certain factors make a man more likely to have a hormone imbalance and, therefore, enlarged breast tissue. They can include:

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney failure
  • A poor diet
  • Being overweight
  • Tumors in either the adrenal glands or the testicles
  • Hypogonadism
  • Hypoandrogenism
  • Hyperthyroidism

Men who are dealing with gynecomastia will also need to examine the medications they are taking. Certain ones have been known to cause or worsen the condition, including:

  • Anabolic steroids
  • Human chorionic gonadotropin (used to boost fertility)
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Certain fungal medications
  • Certain anxiety medications
  • Proton pump inhibitors for heartburn

Additionally, street drugs can contribute to the issue. Marijuana, heroin, amphetamines, methadone, and even alcohol have been linked to the issue. Consulting with a professional is the best way to determine what the cause is in your cause and what to do about it.

Are There Other Symptoms of Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is literally defined as enlarged breast tissue in men, but this does not mean there are no other potential symptoms. If your breast tissue is tender or causing you pain, seek professional treatment. This is also true if you are experiencing discharge from one or both nipples.

Treatment for Gynecomastia

The most effective treatment for this condition is surgery. You can either undergo liposuction, which will simply remove excess fat in the area, or another type of procedure that reshapes the tissue in the area. There are several factors that go into deciding which option is right for you.

If you would like to learn more about gynecomastia and the available treatment options, feel free to set up an initial consultation at The Plastic Surgery Center. We are happy to answer questions and genuinely look forward to hearing from you. Contact us today to book your appointment at our office in Bradenton or Sarasota.

What Are My Options for Fat Removal Without Surgery?

Fat Removal Without Surgery

Many individuals around the world have benefited from liposuction. Liposuction involves making a small incision in the body and then using a tool to physically remove the fat from specific locations. It can get rid of unwanted fat in a quick and easy way. While it may sound great to get rid of fat that has been plaguing your body for so long, you may not like the idea of using surgery. We would be happy to tell you your options for fat removal without surgery.

Thanks to modern technology, there are now a variety of fat removal options without requiring surgery. Some of these treatments use ultrasound, other treatments use heat, and some use cold. Some of them involve applying an applicator to your body and treating the fat, while others never even come into contact with your skin.

One of the options that have proven to be extremely effective for many individuals looking for unwanted fat removal without surgery is called CoolSculpting. This is a fat removal and body contouring treatment that involves placing an applicator on an area where unwanted fat exists. The treatment lasts about 45 minutes. During this time, the fat cells reach such a low temperature that they are damaged. In the months that follow the treatment, your body removes the damaged fat cells.

In most cases, a person will need to allow some time to go by in order to see results from their non-surgical treatment. The fat cells are damaged during the treatment, and then it takes some time for the body to remove these fat cells in a natural way.

It is good for our clients to understand that most fat removal treatments that are available are not designed for obese individuals. They are designed for individuals who are at a healthy weight but have unwanted fat.

The best way to find out about your options for fat removal without surgery is to schedule a consultation. We are happy to tell you that there are many different ways that you can get the body of your dreams without surgery. Please contact us today at the Plastic Surgery Center and schedule your consultation to visit either of our offices in Bradenton or Sarasota, FL!

Four Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men in Sarasota to Consider

plastic surgery

If you are a man in Sarasota that harbors concerns about how this or that feature of your body appears to others, then you are not alone. Men everywhere harbor concerns about the way they look. This prompts men to have plastic surgery performed to correct what they feel is an abnormality in one or more of their features. If you have been thinking that certain features of your body could use tweaking to improve your overall appearance, then plastic surgery might be the answer you have been looking for to achieve the look you want.

Here are four examples of plastic surgery procedures in Sarasota:

Blepharoplasty

If you are starting to look a bit older and worn out in the face, then perhaps blepharoplasty, or eyelid rejuvenation, will help to enhance the handsome features of your face. Getting rid of the bags and fine lines around the eyes will significantly make a man look younger. It might even put the youthful confidence back in those bedroom eyes you used to get comments about in years past.

Rhinoplasty

If you were dealt a nose at birth that grew to not look right on your face, then rhinoplasty may be just the surgical option you have been looking for to reshape your nose. Some men find that fixing the shape of their nose not only improves their looks, but it will often also help them to breathe much better. Improved breathing can also contribute to a better night’s sleep.

Liposuction

While often mistaken for a fat loss procedure, liposuction is really oriented more towards sculpting and contouring the body through the removal of fatty tissue. For some men, this procedure is helpful in the love handle and abdomen regions to improve the contour of their body.

Gynecomastia

If you have a hormone imbalance that causes you to develop breasts that continue to get bigger over time, then gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, might be the answer for many men like you. By reducing the size of the male breasts, helping the area to become flatter and less pronounced, you will be able to return to having male breasts that look manly once again as they did in your youth.

CoolSculpting: Does It Really Work?

CoolSculpting

With the myriad of weight loss program choices out there, many people are in a haze of confusion on just where to start when it comes to losing weight and achieving a more lean and attractive physique. You’ve got major chain programs and different medically supervised programs. There are many online programs and support groups and online tools to track any progress you have been making. You may be constantly working out, measuring every meal portion, watching your sodium intake, and doing everything your doctor suggests, but your still not satisfied with the results. CoolSculpting® may be the next step for you!

CoolSculpting® is a procedure that has been designed to specifically eliminate and freeze away stubborn fats in the body that diet and exercise cannot touch. It helps to remove and target these unwanted cells. One must set up a consult with a CoolSculpting® provider and discuss with the medical professional what results are desired and what goals the patient wants to reach.

The CoolSculpting® process works by delivering a targeted and controlled cooling effect which is concentrated into the fat cells of the skin to freeze the cells. The body’s natural response is to process the frozen fats and eliminate the frozen cells naturally and permanently. The treated fats that have accumulated in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and various other places, soon achieve a more contoured shape as the treatments progress. Overall, the results help the user shed unwanted fat cells and reshape areas of the body needing that extra help.

Not everyone is a good candidate for CoolSculpting®. It is primarily designed for those with smaller amounts of fat in unwanted areas. This non-surgical, non-invasive procedure is merely to tone up stubborn areas and should not be treated as a weight loss procedure. A consultation with our team is necessary to determine if this is the best option for you and your goals.

To learn more about if CoolSculpting® is right for you and your goals, contact us today at the Plastic Surgery Center of Sarasota & Bradenton and schedule your consultation! We proudly serve Southwest Florida from our two offices. Contact us today to learn more about achieving your aesthetic goals!
